Ashtanga Yoga Shala · Gokulam, Mysuru
The old method,
one breath at a time.
Traditional Mysore-style ashtanga, practised six mornings a week and taught one student at a time. Come as you are; the breath will set the pace.
The Shala
A small room, an old practice, and the sound of the breath.
Ujjayi House sits on a quiet lane in Gokulam, the corner of Mysuru where practitioners have gathered at dawn for generations.
We keep the Mysore method as it was given — you arrive, you unroll your mat, and you practise your own sequence while the teacher moves quietly through the room. There is no music, no counting for the room, no rush. Only your breath, the ceiling fan, and the light coming up over the wall.
Beginners are given a short sequence and looked after closely. Longtime practitioners deepen at their own pace. Everyone rests on Saturdays and full-and-new-moon days, the way this practice has always been kept.
“When you can breathe evenly through a posture, the posture is yours. Until then, keep breathing.” — A note on the shala wall

Parampara — taught as it was received
Ujjayi House keeps the ashtanga method in the traditional way: one teacher, one student, one posture given only when the body is ready. Our teacher learned the primary and intermediate series over many years of daily morning practice in this same town, and teaches only what she practises herself.
An introduction, not a test
Arrive by six in the morning and practise at your own pace. You’ll be given a short sequence, shown the breath and the gaze, and looked after closely. Bring a mat if you have one; we have spares if you don’t. No experience is assumed — only willingness.
Two immersions each year
After the monsoon and again in early spring we close the regular timetable for a ten-day immersion — two practices a day, chanting, pranayama, and long, quiet afternoons. Fifteen mats only. The immersion is ₹22,000, including all sessions and philosophy talks; accommodation nearby is arranged on request.
Kaveri Rao
Founder & Lead Teacher
Kaveri has kept a daily Mysore practice for eighteen years and has taught in Gokulam since 2014. She guides each student individually in the traditional method — adjusting quietly, saying little, and giving each new posture only when the breath is ready to carry it.
She is assisted most mornings by Devan Menon, who keeps the Led Primary count and looks after newer practitioners in the room.

In Their Words
What keeps people coming back
I came for a month and stayed for the season. Kaveri watches everything and says almost nothing — exactly what my practice needed.
By six the room is just breath and the sound of the fan. I’ve practised in many places; this one reset how I hold the whole thing.
As a complete beginner I was nervous walking in. My first week here was patient, unhurried, and never once made me feel behind.
